Mom asked, "I wonder when cherries bloom in Japan?" So I found 1200 years of data online and made her a plot.

Tom Lehrer has put all his songs online (including lyrics & sheet music), and given away all rights to them. The site will only be up for a limited time. This is a very niche tweet that will make a small segment of people very happy. https://t.co/sowetybPhT

Local politics will always be fascinating to me and this election was the most interesting one in a LONG time. Because it marked, for the first time, a major shift from the Boomer-centric politics of Austin yore to the Millennial/Gen Z demographic. #austinpolitics

Probably the biggest consequence of last night's Council elections is that the caucus of diehard supply side skeptics has been reduced to two. There's now a veto-proof majority for a broader, more rapid approach to increasing the housing supply in Austin.

When large language models fall short, the consequences can be serious. Why is it so hard to acknowledge that?

“We don’t have to accept this housing denialism as part of our civil discourse. The sea levels are rising. Astronauts did land on the moon. And Austin does need more housing.”

Please don’t vote for Linda Guerrero. To still be arguing in 2022 that Austin doesn’t have a housing shortage is delusional. Let’s be done with that sad, desperate perspective on the city council and move on to actually solving our problems instead.

Those competing to represent District 9, which has some of Austin’s most unaffordable neighborhoods, don’t agree on how to solve the skyrocketing cost of staying housed — or what to blame.

We might not be able to identify the flaw in our reasoning -- you can't see the back of your head -- but in general, the more the conclusions posit future, abstract benefits to justify proximate cruelty & suffering, the more suspect they are.

While I've got you here: Evabel is only $180 shy of her fundraising goal for her non-profit karate dojo. Only one day left to support! Can you help her get all the way?

Our daughter Evabel's Girl Scout troop is raising money by selling delicious nuts and candies (and magazines, too, if you're still into that paper magazine thing.) Grab some! I recommend the Dulce de Leche Owls and Butter Toasted Peanuts, but you do you.
