Half of Gaza is now in IDF hands, with Hamas largely on the other side. Israel now has an opportunity to advance a model for the day after by enabling reconstruction and a technocratic Palestinian administration, argues @mkoplow in this Koplow Column. https://t.co/IYqJlhtICZ

When Trump took office, the one thing that I wanted him to do was to clearly and unambiguously state that if Israel does this, it will be opposed by the US. He’s now gone significantly farther than that.

A hearty mazal tov to the Israeli proponents of West Bank sovereignty, who have managed things so poorly that Trump has now said annexation will cost Israel all US support, Vance has called their stunts stupid and insulting, and Rubio has said that the US opposes their aims

The end of the Gaza war will prompt three reckonings, argues @mkoplow: between Israelis and their leaders, between Israelis and Palestinians, and between Israel and the U.S. Read Michael's insight in @ForeignPolicy:

Netanyahu not going to Sharm today is so short sighted and setting back Israel’s normalization prospects yet again, all for the sake of keeping his coalition for an extra couple of months. Hard to imagine any other conceivable Israel prime minister making the same decision.

Incredible to sign back online after the chag and see the ceasefire news. So much—from Israelis and Palestinians picking their lives back up, to a new Israeli govt—hinged on this. Hopefully this is the beginning of the end, and not the end of the beginning.

For the first time since late March, and after over four months of almost all of its aid being looted due to policy choices, World Food Programme has announced the re-opening of WFP-supported bakeries in central and southern Gaza. What changed?🧵

Hopefully combo of Trump and Arab states can get Israel and Hamas through this first phase, and then the much trickier questions of disarmament, IDF withdrawal, etc. can be tackled. It's in Israel's interest to get through the first part, since their benefits are front loaded END

The best case scenario here is a quick negotiation where a realistic timeframe for the release of all the hostages is established, and at that point you have a ceasefire. Seeing the entire plan through as is was never going to happen, but the first part establishes momentum 4/

There's a good argument for Israel not to halt ops; Hamas says it can't meet the condition of the 72 hour window, so this is an obvious play to get a temporary ceasefire in return for nothing. But tough for Israel to keep going now that Trump has publicly demanded a halt 3/
