I am incredibly honored to share that I have received the 2024 NIH Director’s Award as part of the NIH COVID-19 Autopsy Team. This award was presented to us in recognition of the discovery of SARS-CoV-2 infection and persistence throughout the human body and brain at autopsy.

This summer, my lab group includes 4 talented students from high school to med school, alongside my 3 amazing research assistants. Our gowns were kindly donated, but we didn’t expect them to be so “extra yellow”. So, we laughed and planned this picture, catch the reference 😂

It took some time, but now we have the patent. I did this work between 2014-2018, while I was a PhD student at the UPR. I will be forever indebted with my mentor, Dr. Espino for trusting me from the beginning and helping me in my development as a scientist.

Two things I hope my trainees take away from their time with me is to stay humble and driven, knowing that a career in science transcends personal accomplishments. That their effort should be driven by the conviction that knowledge has the power to change the world.
