Why do we eat pigs but love dogs? The distinction is pretty arbitrary when you think about it… Once you step outside cultural norms, a lot of “normal” practices start looking horrific.

@mikemasm Why do we drink milk from another mammal? Seems weird to drink milk from another species. We're the only one that does. So many people just think it's normal.

@JimmyJoe_Meeker Yes! Plus dairy cows are kept in a constant cycle of pregnancy and birth, with their babies taken away so we can drink milk intended for them. The maternal distress is heartbreaking.

@mikemasm Dogs are pack animals who look to humans as pack leaders and thus were easy to domesticate for companionship. Pigs are not and are also one generation away from breaking out of domestication. There is a huge difference.

@Knight_Nin Intelligence and capacity for suffering are not determined by how easy animals were to domesticate thousands of years ago. Pigs are actually more intelligent than dogs in many cognitive tests

@mikemasm Because about 50,000 years ago, humans domesticated dogs, work and companion, hunter gatherers. 6000 years farming begins, animals like pigs are used for food. This is how we evolved, why dogs react to us very differently from pigs and cows.

@rowan9sam It does not justify continuing it when we have alternatives. We have evolved past needing either hunting partnerships or animal agriculture.

@mikemasm The animals were domesticated for different reasons depending on what they seemed suited for, it doesn't seem completely arbitrary.

@e_wigx ‘Suited for’ based on human convenience, not the animals’ capacity to suffer. Still seems arbitrary from the animals’ perspective.

@mikemasm Pigs are closer to humans than most animals, biologically speaking. Its vile to eat. Not that I'd suggest eating dogs...

@mikemasm You VEGANS are exterminating so many animals for your crops, but conviniently always forget to mention that‼️ Hypocrite❗️ Humans are CARNIVORES‼️ https://t.co/oFddlOyT49

@mikemasm Yup. My best friend lives in Wales and volunteers full-time at a pig sanctuary where over 100 pigs are cared for. She derives more from them than she used to from dogs due to pigs' intelligence and socialization.

@mikemasm If only animals could speak our language. No normal human being would ever eat them.

@mikemasm Humans created dogs as companions because they're best suited to what we need them to do. The pigs you're talking about are alive to ne eaten or they wouldn't be alive. 🥓🐖
