The best advice I ever received was “If you don’t like drawing spaceships, don’t put spaceships in your portfolio.” In other words, only put the work you enjoy making, or want people to pay you for, in your portfolio.

Some of the funniest was my painting professor telling me, "I'm going to set you up with some pen and inks, because if you keep getting oil paint all over yourself you're going to get poisoned."
It worked out great, and pen and ink is still my strongest skillset.

“if you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong” has always helped me get out of certain funks. Reminds me to seek out the joy in every exercise and study, especially when I’m not feeling it

"Dude you want a career, a paycheck and can draw with perspective; Bg design is right there!" I was studying illustration last year and had no idea how well bg design fit my needs

"Skill is the ability to overcome obstacles, the first of which is usually lack of knowledge about the thing we wish to do." - Andrew Loomis. Always hits me. Idk why I constantly forget, but simply lacking knowledge is not a moral failing. Learning what/where to learn is hard.

Not art advice specifically but
@flackboy
told me once "if you do something well, never do it for free or people will take advantage of it" and it's served me well.

Create what you love. Make what makes you happy. Don’t worry if it’s bad or good but just enjoy the process. Also keep Maya (or preferred modeling or texturing program) open so it doesn’t feel like a big to do to start creating. It’s already there waiting and ready for me.

Teacher told me thst once I understand color theory to then ignore it and do whatever I want and I did that and it honestly changed my life I love putting random ass colors wherever I want because it looks cool
