There's an epidemic of loneliness in science: Most Scientists move around & usually end up living far from friends they made in their youth. When they settle in a permanent place they're older & have busy lives/careers. All this means many scientists don't have a lot of friends.

What I don't get about academia is the chronic lack of celebration. It is hard to get & maintain grant funding, hard to get papers accepted without Faustian bargains, hard to be a great mentor, & hard to maximize trainee success. All of it is hard. We should celebrate everything.

Got milk virus genomes? (or any H5N1?) Throw them at https://t.co/Carfmuc0N1 and see where they land in per-segment trees of tens of thousands of public Influenza A H5N1 sequences!

After finishing this book, I can say that I was completely wrong. It’s brilliantly written, well-balanced, and informative. I even came up with a genetic screen idea after reading it 😃 Could be summed up in this quote:
#NowReading “Why We Die”. Loved the Gene Machine but starting this one with a clear bias: What makes him qualified to write this? Winning a Nobel Prize? Let’s see how it goes…

Amazing opening plenary talk at London Calling 2024 #nanoporeconf by my UCSC RNA Center colleague & @NobelPrize Laureate Carol Greider @UCSCscience on using @nanopore sequencing to reveal conservation of chromosome end-specific telomere lengths!

Inspired by @caseybergman, I've removed journal names from HubMed search results (showing MeSH headings instead, when they exist)

Excited to announce that I'm looking for industry partners for my new AI venture, CancerGPT. My algorithm has proven >90% accuracy. You just plug in the chemical description for your new drug, ask it to predict whether it will work in human trials, and CancerGPT says "No."

We have just updated our default genome locations for hg19/hg38 from POMC to the SHH gene. While the name Sonic hedgehog may remind us of our favorite blue speedster, the gene plays a key role in embryonic morphogenesis. Explore this new gene:

Just to keep things into perspective, we just heard from the daycare for the twins, with Yale support. And it is the entirety of my spouse’s paycheck. Something’s gotta give folks, something’s gotta give.
