Author selfie — but this one feels different. Our newest @sabeti_lab paper came out in Science just as conflict escalated between Israel and Iran, Shira’s and my birth countries. A painful reminder of how fragile the world can be. But also a reminder of what’s possible: that

A lot of people know deep down that the Trump Admin is behaving shamefully with regard to Ukraine, but don't want to admit, even to themselves, that America is being dishonorable, so they fixate on matters of no consequence, like Zelensky's manners, to distract their consciences

If Trump would grant Volodymyr Zelensky (head of a country invaded by Russia, w/countless dead soldiers and civilians) a fraction of the grace and open-mindedness he has granted Andrew Tate (accused rapist/sex trafficker), that would be good

In 2019-2021 @BrentNannenga and I put together this methods in cryoem book. It was a lot of work. It sells for 120$ and chapter downloads are 35$. The publisher informed us that they had 78,000 downloads so far. Thats several million dollars profit for them... We got nothing 😳

Since we're talking about funding of absurd research by NIH and other federal agencies, the funded scientists: - watching flies fuck - giving rats massages - spending years digging into why jellyfish glow - tracking penguin poop from space - using horseshoe crab blood

It’s becoming painfully clear that people are incapable or unwilling to understand nuance, unable or unwilling to hold multiple ideas in their heads at once when those ideas create the slightest cognitive dissonance. It’s a maturity issue, and it’s poisoning our discourse.

A quick response to the story that @eLife won't be listed in Web of Science any more. My experiences with Wellcome Open Research https://t.co/dGxWG2KtHq

Web of Science is good with indexing venues that routinely publish inadequate research so long as they don't label them as such.
The Web of Science has suspended the journal eLife from its listings because the novel publishing model adopted last year conflicts with Web of Science’s standards for assuring quality.

The 2024 Summit is over and it was quite an event! We are planning to hold this Summit annually going forward, at Lake Arrowhead as a regular venue. If you know someone that should be invited let us know. All attendees speak. Self nominations are welcome!

This is truly awful. God forbid we should be able to see scientists' comments on research and that reviewers should be accountable and credited for their input. We have totally lost the plot.

And they cost ~1% of journal articles (~0.01% of research). So whatever you think of peer review (we need more vs less vs different vs none), supporting a mechanism that provides rapid and universal free access to knowledge should be a no-brainer

Preprint servers are a low-cost mechanism for providing free access to research findings, and can also significantly accelerate research itself by making results available immediately. This Perspec...
#Preprints are important and valued in (most) job and fellowship applications. Also, they are the best currency for exchange of information, feedback and proof of what we are doing with funding.

As a doctor whose wife experienced 4 miscarriages amongst the 3, now healthy adult children we have raised, I can’t stop thinking about @JDVance’s answers on abortion during the VP debate. Here is the problem with his and Trump’s “leave it to the states” approach. 1/13

Sara @RouhiRoo live tweeting my talk today, making me sound much smarter than I actually am. #thankyou
#SSPND24 @maw_tweets PRC doesn't throw out #peerreview but frames it in a more realistic light: valuable discourse that's transparent. "What I love most is that it elevates peer review. Demands a different level of accountability. Reviews can be credited" #openscience
