The "Was Jesus a Jew?" question only gets traction because of the ambiguity of the word "Jew".
Was Jesus a Hebrew of the tribe of Judah?—Yes.
Was Jesus a practitioner of the Rabbinic religion which we today call "Judaism"?—No.

Christianity is ancient Hebrew revelation united to Greek metaphysics.
The Sun of Thunder, St John, who heard the heartbeat of God incarnate, who in the Prologue , reveals all.
It is perfect.

I've also seen a (frankly rather American) objection that since he grew up in Galilee and not Judea, he wasn't a Judean and therefore not a Jew.

Yes, jesus was a "Pharisee" and practiced until his death, as did ALL of his disciples.
Any cursory reading of the christian scriptures betrays that fact and no serious scholar claims otherwise.
