Well, I mean, there are several mosques in Istanbul which have a very similar architectural typology, and built to the same scale.....so clearly, there was nothing preventing them from building something of a similar stature.

That's not right. If you look at the Islamic imitations, they were unable to replicate the suspension of the dome. That's why the Mosques all have huge pillars where Hagia Sophia has free space.

Of course it hurts losing a symbol and a landmark icon such as The Hagia Sophia and Constantinople.
Didn't the Palestinians lose Jerusalem? They lost the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa mosque.

Haghia Sophia isn't simply a "symbol" or "landmark". It's a *Church* and *Cathedral* — the central Cathedral of Orthodox Christianity — which was desecrated by the Ottoman horde.
