Hi my name is Linnea DeWaard and I have the honor of being the new girls XC coach at East High School in Des Moines, Iowa. I’m all about celebrating, believing, and helping athletes become the best and truest version of themselves!
Today an East football player told me his favorite team is the Packers -
@AllenLazard
I showed him this picture of us from when I wore your jersey in high school 😂😂😂 Hope all is well!!
I almost cried today because I’m feeling so thankful that there are now double digits on our team. I was really hoping the day would happen when we would have at least 10 for our first season and the girls did it! It was all them. They’re the ones who did the recruiting. So proud
YA’LL I GOT 20 GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cannot believe this is happening. Honestly didn’t even know if I’d have 5 - and I have 4x that many. Wow. Feeling beyond grateful 😭😭😭😭
Here’s Paulina - running at Simpson next year. Came out for XC last fall and fell in love with the sport & wanted to keep doing it in college ❤️ First person in her fam to go to college & wants to be a teacher ‼️ Natural leader, eager to get better, & a joy to coach. So POY 🥹🥹
Here’s to year two of coaching at a school where the XC program has been small for decades. Thanks for following and encouraging me along this journey. I love keeping my Twitter community updated 🫶🏼 My program is all about belonging, believing, & becoming ❤️ Go Scarlets!!!!!
Had the most girls ever at practice today. 4 new girls joined this week. Y’all, I think we’re going to hit our goal of 20 girls by the end of August 😭😭😭😭😭 Thanks for rooting for us!!! Feel so loved by the Twitter community of runners/coaches ❤️❤️❤️
Sorry for the greasy photo. This is Axel. He’s a senior. Ran track for the first time this year and helped his 4x800 get to state. Finished the season with a PR of 2:02 🥹 His joy is contagious and I’m going to miss coaching him so much!!!!!
Cheers to my second year coaching the girls xc team at East. Feels risky to say my goal for the year because what if it doesn’t happen? But I’m saying it!!! 20 girls on our roster by the end of August ‼️ It’s been yearssss since the program had 20. Let’s get it ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Last team meal tonight before districts tomorrow. Question of the day, “What’s your favorite memory from this season?” I loved hearing their favorite moments. My first season as a head coach has almost concluded - these girls taught me a LOT this fall. Forever grateful
When one of your boy 800m athletes goes sub 2:10… last season they rarely got under 2:20. LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
@coachjayjohnson
I’m seeing real progress and change in my team!
Met with a XC coach today and they brought a list of their favorite resources. Thankful for coaches who are willing to answer questions/share their experiences/ups/downs/reflections☺️
Our first 5k (back in August), we had 3 girls race. The rest weren’t ready because they had just come out for the team. TODAY we have 9!!!!!!!!! A full squad 😭😭😭 Still have 15+ that will hopefully be added to the 5k soon 😏
Family of THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Henry James was born on April fools day 🤪 A few weeks early and healthy ❤️ Bout to spend a lot of his time these next couple months at the track hehe
@joshua_dewaard
Belong. Believe. Become. The vision for the boys track program at East. Had our info meeting yesterday. Practice starts Monday ‼️‼️ So thankful to be on staff with my husband and work together to provide a culture where kids feel known and loved!!!!!!!
Ran a mile road race for the first time tonight -
@DrakeRelays
thanks for putting on such a fun event!!! Cheesin so hard in this photo haha. Goal was sub 7:00 & got 6:21!!!
When Paulina finishes and says “Coach I think I could’ve gone even faster” - she raced her first 5K tonight and KILLED it. Big things coming for this girl!
I had the privilege of attending
@PellaDutchXC
practice today. Learned so much from their coaches and athletes! Their team culture is amazing. Feel grateful for coaches who are willing to invest in the younger generation of coaches ❤️😊
Added four more girls to the 5k crew tonight! SO SO SO PROUD. They went from zero running to now RACING 3 miles. 10 girls total raced tonight. The rest came to cheer & then did their workout. Something amazing is happening with the East Girls XC team 😭😭❤️❤️
When two athletes on your team, who are new to the sport, are leaving practice thinking about all of their friends they need to text because they want them to join the team 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭
Who else from Iowa is at the trials?! Never thought I’d be here to watch in person. This is a DREAMMMMMM 😭 shoutout to my husband
@joshua_dewaard
for wrangling our son for the next few days solo 🤪
ELEVEN girls raced their first ever 5k tonight. And the joy on their faces (obvi pain too haha) when they crossed the finish line was surreal. So so so so so so proud. 😭
sometimes being a coach means noticing someone not being themselves so you pull them aside and ask how they’re doing - was reminded today that some of our kids have some hard stuff going on 🫶🏼🫶🏼 if you’re a coach, keep loving on the kids in your program!
“These shoes feel SO good” thanks
@MikeJaytrackxc
for providing shoes for an incoming freshmen on our team!! 🫶🏼🫶🏼♥️♥️ she said “I’ve been wearing my moms shoes to practice” but now she’s got new kicks and LOVING them
Very very very excited for track this season especially because my husband is the new boys track and field coach at East!!!! Gahhh!! So fun!!! Can’t wait to coach the kids together 🥰♥️
The magic of recruitment — your seniors convincing freshmen at their orientation to come out for cross country because they’re going to have a blast. Second year of coaching — momentum is happening and I’m so so so so grateful!!!!!!!!!
Doing an end of season 800m time trial for fun this afternoon - and I’m racing the girls. I really want to win (competitiveness in me) 😂😂 I’ll report back
Coach Jay’s thoughts on middle school training - “We set out to create a culture where running is fun, where racing is fun, and where kids get better from the first meet of the year to the last meet of year.”
yes and amen!!!!
@coachjayjohnson
Our 4x800 team went 8:12 at districts last week. We haven’t run that fast since before 2007 - and who knows, maybe longer than that? The online stats only go back to 2007. Here’s what I think contributed to our success this season:
This is Panga. Her family moved here a few months ago from Zimbabwe. She is the hardest worker I know & comes to practice everyday. You have been such a gift to me this summer! You are so brave and have so much resilience!
What do you do when you’re pumped for your first athlete/parent meeting and most communicate they can’t make it? You get their addresses and drive to their house to hand them the summer training calendar & hope that communicates that you care and want them on the team ♥️
Some girls ran almost 30 minutes today. They said, “I can’t believe 10 minutes used to be hard” 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I said, “That’s what happens when you progress over time”
@coachjayjohnson
My reflections after my first week of coaching both boys and girls: I think girls bring the goofiness and importance of not taking ourselves too seriously. Our guys bring the mentality of hard work. Feeling really thankful for the athletes I get to coach the szn!!
Cheers to my second year coaching the girls xc team at East. Feels risky to say my goal for the year because what if it doesn’t happen? But I’m saying it!!! 20 girls on our roster by the end of August ‼️ It’s been yearssss since the program had 20. Let’s get it ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Leaving our first brainstorm meeting about how we can impact the youth on the east side and I’m FIRED UPPPP! Future Scarlet runners… buckle up, we got some fun things coming 🤪
Girls ran 15 min today!!!!! And one of my athletes, whose family moved here from Zimbabwe 2 months ago, asked me after, “coach can I go run 10 more minutes” 🤯
Josh, I’ve watched you love on these kids for YEARS and now you get to have your dream job. Henry and I are so proud of you!!!!!!!!!! Let’s do this!!!!!
East welcomes Josh DeWaard as our Head Football Coach. Josh has served as an Assistant Football and Basketball coach and is our current Head Boys Track Coach.
Still can’t believe josh is the head football coach for the same school I’m the head xc coach - gonna be a wild summer/fall 2024 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 in it together!!! 💕💕
Thanks
@TheIowaFdn
for making this track camp possible 😭🥹 3 years ago I tried it and only 6 kids came. Tried it again this year and had 42 tonight - couldn’t have done it without Travis & Brad!!!! What happens when you meet people who have the same vision/passion as you do
Qwaden, Javarius, Teaghan, Tayte. Didn’t get many photos last night because I was so hyped hahaha but here’s one I got of our sprint medley - THEY BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD.
I told my summer running crew that if we got to 20 girls I’d throw our team a party. Welp, we’re not at 25+ 😅🔥 Throwing them a pizza & bracelet making party after our run today. FEELING SO GRATEFUL🫶🏼
Trying something new for the next four school days. A “Future Scarlet Runners” clinic at one of our feeder middle schools. Hoping it’ll boost our running pipeline into high school ✨
Also couldn’t do this without my two (Henry doesn’t count 🤣) assistant coaches. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you 🤪 But for real, Laurel & Mallory make us better everyday 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
3 years ago decided I wanted to go back to school to be a SPED teacher. Classes started fall 2022. Had a baby in the midst of it - took a semester off. BUT WE HAVE ALMOST MADE IT. My last semester of class began this week!!! LETS GOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
#mompower
Often I feel like my xc program isn’t getting better — but then there are times (like this week) when I’m encouraged because this spring break, more than ever before, girls are running ON THEIR OWN without a scheduled practice ☀️♥️
When a freshmen (who’s new to xc) ran a hard workout today and you ask her how it went and she smiled real big and said “great actually” 😁😁😁 celebrating the small things!!!!
S/O to the East boys 4X800 - they already beat last year’s best time by 10 seconds and have already run individually faster than the end of their season last year. And we’ve only just begun 🤗 They work so hard everyday and I love seeing them celebrate together!!!!!!!
When a sophomore, who’s never run the mile before, gets 2nd in JV and would’ve gotten 6th against Varsity. AND goes sub 5:00. This happened last night!! Josh (husband and head boys coach) FaceTimed me during the mile so I sort of got to see it - maternity leave probs 😂
Our HS girls xc team is headed over to Hoyt today to eat pizza with our Hoyt & Hiatt middle schoolers. Trying to build a pipeline to get more xc runners involved at the high school level! If you have any ideas for how you get middle school students in your program LMK.
Cool story. There’s an ELL teacher and PE teacher who work at the school who help me recruit (I don’t work at the school) - they recruited 2 ELL students who moved here as refugees from Thailand in November. Last week, 5 min was really hard for them. Today - they crushed 12 😀💪🏼
PLEASE WELCOME my assistant xc coach!!!!!! Laurel Murphy (soon to be Rhone 👰🏼♀️) “I’m excited to inspire our young lady athletes to learn and grow. I love coaching, laughing, and having fun with the girls.” Surround yourself with people who make you better 💪🏼
Had an info meeting before school for cross country today at Hiatt Middle School, which turned into them asking to run, which turned into me coming back over their lunch so they could race 😂😂😂😂
@HiattMiddle
This morning at practice, one of my athletes asked how I would make CDs when I was younger… I then had to explain the process of making a playlist on iTunes, and then putting a blank cd in the computer (not a laptop) to burn music… Made me feel really old lol
There are twin sisters doing XC for the first time this summer - ELL learners and parents speak Karen. A returning senior on our team, whose parents also speak Karen, translated a welcome message for me to send 😌♥️ Look how beautiful this is!!!
