There's a reason the abuse of memory is so central to 1984. Memory is how we teach kids what is normal. If that's too judgemental a term, use 'typical' or "to be expected." click on the pics! Central to why @HistoryMatrs.
If you teach social studies, at any level, you need to get this book, turn to chapter eleven (The Power of Memory and Erasure) and dive in. Wow! 𤯠#sschat

Academics and vets collaborate to unearth George Washington's role in a 1758 battle, in what Churchill called the first "world war." Primary sources shed light on a friendly fire incident that haunted the President for decades. @HistoryMatrs

Don't blame schools for our loss of civic virtue says @rickhess99 but they're "a crucial place for addressing this lapse & promoting healthier habits. And even the attempt can offer an excuse to talk about ground rules and responsibilities." Amen!

Thanks for sharing the news of remarkable K5 history instruction that @HistoryMatrs observed in Louisiana. One thing we didn't see in two days? A single 'behavioral' issue. Engaging curriculum=engaged kids.

I saw students at Highland who already had access to rich vocabulary and history in 4th and 5th grade. Whose teachers and administrators know how much @HistoryMatrs Who will, soon, be able to read Greenās books. And contribute to perfecting our world.

Greenās biggest claim is that TB sufferers deserve our empathy. Which is predicate to our caring for them. He marshals a ton of history to back this claim. Quite convincingly. But evaluating his beliefs requires #backgroundknowledge.

Teachers fear tackling touchy topics? Book banning, religion & political power, were all up for debate in this fifth grade lesson on Galileo, geocentrism and heresy. @doelouisiana knows that @HistoryMatrs

Ironically sharing @C_Hendrick on a platform antithetical to his goal. Please read his full essay! Starting in K5 offers the best chance to reverse the effects he rightly decries. History, full of complex narrative and human behaviors, is a great place to start! @HistoryMatrs

Skip the tequila shots! #OTD in 1862 Mexican forces defeat a French army in Puebla. Many Americans trace their roots to Puebla. Lots of opportunities to reveal the shared, and complex, history between our southern neighbor. And kids love a good battle story! @HistoryMatrs
