We hope our work will open the door to a deeper understanding of how the host environment shapes the population structure of these parasites, identifying host selection bottlenecks that could be strengthened to restrict infection by these pathogens and reduce disease.

We establish a simple (and cheap!) #CRISPR method to introduce cellular barcodes into Toxoplasma gondii and Trypanosoma brucei, and follow changes in the population structure as Toxoplasma colonizes the host brain for the first time. .
