Nearly 4 in 10 rural Medicaid enrollees under 65 have a diagnosed chronic condition. The most commonly diagnosed conditions are physical, such as high blood pressure, obesity and high cholesterol. Others include mental health and substance use conditions.

10% of the nation’s 16 million veterans are enrolled in Medicaid. The share is higher in Medicaid expansion states. Many veterans use Medicaid alongside Medicare or VA health care, especially as they age and their health needs increase.
