🇨🇦 @McGillRehab @memorylab1 @CIHR_IRSC post-doc. How can exercise improve 🫀🧠 post-stroke? he/him, en/fr.

Excited to have some of my PhD work published in @StrokeAHA_ASA. We show that people with stroke can also benefit from high-intensity interval training. We found clinically meaningful gains in fitness after 12 weeks of short interval HIIT.
ahajournals.org
BACKGROUND: Limited evidence supports the effects of short-interval high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for improving cardiorespiratory fitness (V̇O2peak) after stroke. We aimed to compare the...

My last PhD study was just published looking at the perspectives of people post-stroke who completed a 12-week HIIT trial. People post-stroke describe that HIIT is empowering and enables meaningful engagement in both ADLs and IADLs. Check it out below:

Just published in Disability and Rehabilitation. A timed sit-to-stand test and prediction equation had no agreement with fitness in people with stroke. A simple test of fitness for people with stroke is required. @liamgjohnson @GavinWPhysio @ProsperRehab

I remember (and kind of miss) those days: 530am lifts, class 8am to 2pm, meetings+practice+dinner+meetings 3-10pm. Rinse and repeat.
The amount of teams/coaches still making college athletes wake up at 6 am (or earlier) to train, lift, & practice is 🤯🤯🤯. The data are incredibly clear here. Bad idea.

It’s time we treat stroke like a cardiac event with structured #exercise, risk factor management, & prevention-focused rehab. Cardiac rehab model for stroke is long overdue. #StrokeRehab #CardiacRehab @TalyaFlemingMD @NatFiniPhysio @NataliaRostMD @kevinmoncion @MacstrokeCan
Patients who experience a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke face a high risk of subsequent strokes, emphasizing the need for both short-term and long-term prevention strategies. https://t.co/ANuAKou8Pa
