#EMT is an early event in cell dissemination from epithelial tissues. @EricTheveneau &co show that in frog embryos the #metalloproteinase MMP28 is produced by placodes & acts inside the nucleus of neighboring neural crest cells to trigger EMT #PLOSBiology

Pluripotency genes are co-expressed in the developing neural crest at all axial levels independent of the future neural crest lineage they will commit to. We also show broad ectodermal pluripotency in mouse embryos, suggesting a conserved mechanism across vertebrates. 7/7 🐥🐭

Morpholino-mediated knockdown of individual pluripotency genes shows defects in “common stem cell regulation” whereas no signs of the pluripotency genes promoting a specific neural crest future lineage were detected, suggesting a lineage-independent role in neural crest formation
