CivitAI, a platform for custom Stable Diffusion models, announced they’ll start accepting takedown requests from artists if/when a model is tuned to imitate them specifically. This was generally met with displeasure and even outrage by AI users. Here’s an open letter one posted:
Wild to see these reactions, when the announcement is this tame.
I believe CivitAI made a correct, respectful decision towards artists without whom these models wouldn’t even exist, and to their users who want their hobbies to be as ethical as possible.
The sense of entitlement is baffling, really. No, copying someone’s art without their consent isn’t a ‘basic human freedom’ come on.
And they are training these models with our original artworks. Not their hand-drawn interpretations of our styles, but with our work specifically.
It was brought to my attention that someone from CivitAI is behind that despicable SamDoesArts model contest apparently??? I can only hope the person got fired and this new decision regarding takedowns is company’s way of trying to rectify the situation 🫣
Yep, it was them. And it’s our fault we’re not trampling over each other for the honor of kissing their feet at doing the bare minimum and after such a disgraceful act at that? 🫠
@jramseyi
Not only that, but merely imposing SOME limitations on the technology that automates creativity and has great potential for harm is apparently anti-human.

“Copying style and learning from anyone’s work is a basic freedom” <- ummm no, that’s just called stealing 😒
But glad to see more restrictions and protections in place around AI generated images used artists’ work without their consent! This is a step in the right direction
@michellieart
Someone said the main problem might be that these people simply neither know nor care about the etiquette in the art community. Directly ripping one person off is still considered an awful offensive thing to do, even if done by humans.
@katriadoodles
...weirdly getting vibes like an incel complaining about women from this...
kinda funny. mostly sad that they'd be this incensed over basic human decency.
@seaottvrs
I’ve been getting these vibes from that subreddit from the get-go. It takes a special kind of entitlement and resentment towards something you secretly covet.
@katriadoodles
1. NOT getting consent from the artist is “100% moral” ? Since when is consent negotiable? You can argue legalese all you want, but using this as a talking point makes you out to be a creep. 1/
