I do this! Several years ago, I decided to use the same spreadsheet from year to year so I can easily look back and compare months/years. Another tip - have a checking account and credit card dedicated to business only. It makes taxes much easier!.
If you're doing VO, or any other gig work, make sure you're keeping a spreadsheet. It should have a date, project name, who is responsible for paying you (whether direct or via agent), studio/client name, amount and whether or not you have been paid. I also leave an extra column.
