There are plenty of Crown Court trials going on every day up and down the country. But there could be more, if successive Govts had not closed so many court buildings and sold them off, and are still keeping about 15-20% of available Crown Court court rooms closed each day

Judges thanking juries for their service now carries much more weight in light of Lammy's plans. Today, at the end of a manslaughter trial at Maidstone Crown, HH Mrs Justice Norton said: "We cannot try cases without you. We really can't. You are a valuable part of the system."

The only positive in David Lammy's outlandish concept of scraping jury trials is the fact it may actually cut the queues to get into court buildings.....

He was nothing but skin and bones, curled up on a sun-bleached wooden deck in the middle of nowhere. No food. No water. No shelter. No hope. On a tiny, uninhabited fishing island off the coast of Belize, miles from shore, a starving puppy lay waiting for the end. But then… he

A four-week trial at Maidstone Crown Court has just been given a fixed date in January 2029....only for prosecution counsel to reveal their unavailability due to another fixture in their diary. Having remarked it was "years away", the judge said he could not delay it further.

Today is THE day new rules come into force requiring parties seeking reporting restrictions to provide notice to the media. Freelancers can request to be added to the list of people who receive notice. Failure to give notice is a ground to challenge any restriction. Blog:

If any of my legal or court reporters friends are at Ipswich Crown Court today could you please pop in to Recorder Bate-Williams' courtroom and tell him that Canterbury Crown Court has been waiting 40 minutes for him to link in! All attempts to contact him from here have failed.
