I have a bit of personal-professional news that I’m excited to share now that it’s official. This fall, I’ll be starting a new position as Assistant Professor of Communications and Media Studies in the English Department at Memorial University in St John’s, Newfoundland!.

Colleagues seem surprised to see me running in the halls, flitting from meeting to office to archives to talks to classrooms. My project is to tame my schedule because this is unsustainable.

How is it that time becomes so slippery at a point in my career where I need it to be ultrapredictable? Hard to get traction on my priorities when my schedule gets away from me so easily w the addition of new meetings, all the emails and admin, political crises, health, et al.

the other night at a party in Oxford this guy called Paul asked what I did for a living,I said “a lecturer in philosophy”.He was angered & demanded more info. I said I’m “mainly a philosopher of art etc” He replied: “wtf, it’s so embarrassing that you’d call urself a philosopher”.

I’m so heartened by the thoughtful, intelligent writing submitted by the great majority of my students for their first assignments. Grading can sometimes be soul-crushing but this time it seems to reflect the good faith efforts I witness in my lectures and seminars. ❤️.

It's one thing to post your work. Post it often! I don't mind seeing it in my various feeds! Glad I can access and find it when I want to. But when you're sending it to me via personal channels, such as my DMs, you're demanding my attention directly and I only have so much energy.

I'm asking all the men (there are several) who continuously send me their work unsolicited (this is a Thing, apparently) to please stop, as politely and diplomatically as possible. Realized that I was feeling my boundaries being pushed and my space invaded. Response has been ok.

A reminder to screen for breast cancer regularly. Watching my mum & my brilliant friend Elizabeth undertake the harrowing treatment makes me want to stand on my soapbox in the street and ask everyone to check themselves, their partners. A bell that cannot be unrung, indeed ❤️.
