The ferries on the SF bay generate $12M in passenger fares and have $145M in expenses. Ride them while you can, they are amazingly fast, clean, and almost always empty.

Tree growth is essentially a room temp CVD process. Atmospheric co2 + h2o precursors are catalyzed by metal complexes and enzymes that yield a glucose product and o2 byproduct. For a 2 mm tree ring the dep rate comes out to ~200nm/hr, or comparable to ALD.

The valve metal oxidizes in salt water to form a self-healing passivating layer. So these can be mated even when wet. These use Nb but other valve metals that have low solubility in salt water should also work (eg Ta, Zr).

This is a clever approach for undersea electrical connectors: don't even try to keep the terminals dry, and instead exploit the oxidization of terminals coated with a valve metal.
