Technically, a Neural Network is just a Big Fancy Squiggle Fitting Machine. Give it some data, and a Neural Network will fit a squiggle to it. Don’t believe me? Check out the ‘Quest:

I've been asked to define Neural Network. Here's a draft (in 3 parts): Neural Network - A long time ago some people tried to create an algorithm that mimicked the biology of the brain and called it a Neural Network. They failed miserably.

More recently, some other people decided to keep the algorithm, but leave out the “mimicked the biology of the brain” part, and now we have Siri, Alexa, cars that can sort of drive themselves and phones that can separate pictures of spaghetti from pictures of cats.

@joshuastarmer Seems mostly legit but doesn’t tease out differences between this Big Fancy Squiggle Fitting Machine and other Big Fancy Squiggle Fitting Machines

@joshuastarmer I'm only half jocking advocating for renaming neural networks to differentiable tensorial circuits.

@AlejandroPiad I actually think there are quite a few people that think they should be renamed.
