Congratulations to Marcus, who is one of the nicest, cleverest people that I’ve ever worked with.
Many congratulations to our colleague, APCC Director of Policy and Strategy, Dr Marcus Roberts, on becoming an MBE in the King's New Year Honours for services to public safety and to victims of addiction. Congratulations, too, to former South Wales PCC, Alun Michael, and former

Great to start my Christmas break - and my Christmas shopping - with a trip to @BackstoryLdn this morning. Such a privilege to live near such a friendly, helpful independent bookshop. And they have good coffee, too. https://t.co/muXs1S8pvf

We’re so grateful to everyone who’s donated, whether it’s £5 or £5,000. Our supporters are amazing!
In a year which has been difficult for so many, our supporters' commitment has been incredible and brought hope to so many people in prison. They have helped to fund over 1,500 courses during 2024! https://t.co/IBe4e3N0zt

This was a really good day, and @frankcottrell_b was *great*.
@Waterstones #ChildrensLaureate @frankcottrell_b brought the joy of reading to children visiting their dads at @HMPFeatherstone. The event formed part of Pact’s Family Literacy in Prisons course, which helps parents in prison support their children’s literacy development and

There’s still an hour left of the @BigGive, so it’s not too late to donate. And if you like parks and London, please consider @CPRELondon and their great work to improve local green spaces. (Full disclosure: my wife @LauraLikesParks works there!) https://t.co/3zULqk4tuE

We've made it to our @BigGive target! A huge, huge thank you to the 138 people who have donated. It's so inspiring to have your support. And well done to my amazing colleagues for organising the whole thing and, as always, making it all run like clockwork.
We’re 81% of the way there with 24 hours to go! Can you help us get to our target? https://t.co/xITZWNzmXw

Great to visit @HMPFeatherstone with @prisonadvice to hear about their Family Literacy in Prisons (FLIP) course and speak to people who'd done, and really enjoyed, it. Thanks to @AndyKeenDowns for the invitation. Find out more about FLIP here ⬇️. https://t.co/wAJ3bYylA3

This is an incredible, inspiring essay by Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in the @FT, describing the power of reading and its importance when she was imprisoned in Iran. @FreeNazanin

New projections show that the prison population is expected to increase to 95,700-105,200 by March 2029, with a central estimate of 100,800. But, as the projections acknowledge, a lot will depend on what comes out of @DavidGauke's sentencing review. https://t.co/q14Fm0oNbt

So the revolving door of ministers at the Ministry of Justice didn't stop revolving for long, with the Courts Minister off to be SoS for Transport after not even 6 months. (I hear she was well thought of in the MoJ so the promotion isn't much of a surprise in the circumstances.)
Heidi Alexander MP @Heidi_Labour has been appointed Secretary of State for Transport @TransportGovUK.

Any prospective landlords want to take on my local pub @thegorringepark and save it from closing permanently? Looks like it'll need a new kitchen as the upstairs is being sold/let separately, presumably as flats. @tootingnewsie @TootingAbout @TootingBB

The report also shows that people think incapacitation is the most important purpose of prison, followed by rehabilitation and then punishment.

Interesting research report by @SentencingAcad on public attitudes to prison. 73% of people think prisons are either 'not at all' (21%) or 'not very' (52%) effective at rehabilitation and preventing reoffending. https://t.co/kcPP3gd579
