A good place to start for historical context is Tim Wu’s The Master Switch. I don’t agree with many of his positions today; but the context his book sets up is highly relevant to today.

3/ he coins the word “chaord“ - chaos and order - but really mostly notes that the most interesting systems - like the Internet, Visa, open source - are some mix of chaotic and ordered control. Once you look for these, you see them everywhere.

2/ Dee Hock is the founder if Visa, and it's from a talk he gave in 1994. He identifies the issue with virtually all hierarchical orgs and anticipates the devolution into the more complex systems we are seeing now.

2/ Beyond all that, though, in our modern connected world, we are not showing a fantastic ability to navigate global crises when information is emerging, or simply unknown. We’re showing profoundly susceptible to mis-information, unable to shift positions as data changes, etc.

6/ and I’m finding people, given these tiny and unique windows into the world, are diverging on what they believe is true in the world. I worry about it. That we're all going to come back and not quite realize that each others' perspectives have shifted.

5/ i also think we are in a dangerous zone where everyone has viewed their world through an insanely small aperture for a year. in some cases, that’s increased empathy and understanding, but in many I’ve observed, it’s eroded them.

3/ I think a lot about all the trivial stuff - the missed soccer games, the missed vacations, seeing friends for dinners on long summer nights. And I feel really acutely disappointed for our 9th grader, who really hasnt even been to campus after nearly a year.

2/ just about a year since Mom died - not of Covid, but locked down in an ICU at the beginning of the panic. I miss her every day still, she went out basically on her own terms, which I’m grateful for.

3/ and I think that will push people of all ideologies, not just in politics but in just about all forms of thoughts and habits, into increasing niches and extremes.

2/ apart from all the other effects of the pandemic, I worry a lot about the consequences of our isolation from each other. Spending time only with those closest to us -- in our houses, in our Zoom rooms at work -- will tend to exacerbate our filter bubbles.
