I grew up being taught that sex is the next worst sin to murder* and now over the past year I’ve heard story after story of church leaders downplaying sexual ABUSE because the abuser is “an upstanding man with the priesthood” and “it would be a shame to ruin his/our reputation”
*there’s a very good argument to be made that that’s an incorrect reading of Alma but that’s not what I was taught in YW, that’s not the framework I was working within when I felt shatteringly guilty over “masturbating a bit” or “kissing with tongue for too long”
So yeah it’s hard not to read the double standard as being mainly about controlling women’s sexuality and ingrained leniency towards men’s sexual excesses than any kind of deep moral commitment to chastity, at least on the level of population trends

Yeah, it's becoming even more startlingly clear that *female* consensual sex is the worst sin next to murder and *male sexual violence* is a minor misstep that requires 3 hrs-6 weeks of passive not-abusing to "repent" from.

I wonder if Eli's sons weren't "upstanding men with the priesthood", or whether it was a shame to ruin King David's reputation. Time for some Samuels and Nathans. ⚡⚡⚡

I was brought up in a Mormon church and I wasn't taught that sex was a sin next worst to murder, however I was always uncomfortable with the idea of it (even the idea of relationships) purely because of it
