Friends' success because it was placed between Mad About You and Seinfeld is also a reminder that a lot of shows used to be hits just because people didn't turn the TV off after their favorite show. Very hard to have someone accidentally watch a show on streaming.

Sean Hayes and Eric McCormack have a podcast now and they said that “Will & Grace” succeeded because the execs made sure it was on an 830 or 930 time slot so that it could “sneak up on people”

Fascinated by the shows that got millions of viewers thanks to those golden timeslots but were canceled after one season for not keeping *enough* of their lead-ins.

This proved to be damaging to NBC in the long-run as they put out a ton of mediocre timeslot hits in the mid-90s through the mid 00s which slowly rotted their brand away. Even then viewers could tell you what they actually liked what was just background noise.

I know I watched whole seasons of Darma and Greg and don't remember a single episode just because it was on after Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

It’s one of the reasons I’m convinced The Simpsons is still around. It comes on right after football, and people just don’t turn it off.
@iramadisonthree
Ok then why is it still one of the most popular shows now. The money they make on residuals each year shows that people did watch the show and still do till this day.

Friends: famously about a pack of “sex-starved losers”. So much so that nobody wanted to emulate its characters with, say, a namesake haircut or anything.

The producer of CAGNEY & LACEY told composer Bill Conti to make the theme like it was for a comedy so he could trick and hold the audience of the sitcom airing in the preceding slot.

Friends got higher ratings than Mad About You so this isn't exactly true. It also ran for more seasons than MAY and Seinfeld. You don't have to like Friends, but it's a fact that it was a very popular show.

Maybe initially but they didn’t last if they didn’t deliver the goods. There are plenty of examples of flops in NBC’s very same Thursday night lineup.
