Just witnessed a near perfect
@BWC_NHS
moment.
Clinician and parent passing each other in the corridor.
Clinician: How are you?
Mum: OK, he's a bit better now...
Clinician: Yes, but I know about him. But how are you?…
@BWCHBoss
I always forget that adult wards still do this puzzling thing called "visiting time".
In paediatrics we've figured out that parent visitors provide a lot of the care and data so we can do our jobs better.
(I realise that visitors make the place untidy. But come on...)
Hello
@RoyalMailHelp
At midday today your driver mounted the pavement and drove at me.
He ignore the double yellow lines and the no unloading sign. Harborne High Street, B17 9PN.
He responded to my challenge with impatient sarcasm.
What action will you be taking please?
"You know what the biggest problem on the roads is?" he said.
I looked at him, single occupant in his 4WD, taking the entire width of the country lane.
I looked at me, about the same width as my handlebars.
I paused, assuming the question to be rhetorical.
He said:
"Cyclists"
The replies here imply that, even when on a separated cycle path, all cyclists are expected to anticipate *every possible* bit of twattery from those driving.
Jeremy is my age (ish). But what about a 10 year old? Why shouldn't they be able to assume that they're relatively safe?
Hello medical, and perhaps cycling twitter.
Could I politely ask for a signal boost for this please?
We're riding in memory of our colleague, Vish, and raising money for a subject that was close to his heart.

@RoyalMailHelp
Sorry, you're saying we can't get folk into haulage because they can't casually break the law and put pedestrians at risk? Right.

So.
Anyone else?
Every evening, a bit of a tickle at the back of the throat.
Every morning, just fine.
I don't like the word "psychosomatic" but I do think my body is taking the mickey a bit.
Anyone else?
It's really strange.
There do seem to be people out there with chunks of their humanity missing.
Some of them are governing us.
But there are wonderful people everywhere.
Just take a look at this.
It's not unique either.
This is everywhere, if you look.
What an incredible day I’ve had! I’m exhausted. Honestly, I am. I feel on top of the world & slightly dazed. I never expected my adventure would elicit so much interest, generosity, kindness & love. I’m truly deeply grateful to all of you. Thank you. Contd/
I was wondering if I should share that I'm a consultant general paediatrician with quite a few years under my belt and I'm unclear if we have a functioning thermometer in the house...
Just read an online review on a great place I often stop for coffee which rates it low because "Cyclists hog all the outside seats" and I'm thinking I don't even know where to begin on that...
(but I will be going back for more coffee...)
What an amazing end to an emotional day for Team Vish. 112 miles, 5 Neonatal Units, 19 riders all for 1 great man who we will never forget. So many thanks to our riders, supporters and to everyone who donated

I've got to say.
Which ever way this all goes.
I work with some astounding people

and in the wider
@NHSuk

I have seen so much hard work, flexibility, cooperation, imagination.
From the front door and, if possible, even more behind the scenes.
I feel such pride.

Been happening to Shakespeare for about 400 years!
Standard thing is:
"(quote)" then "Shakespeare", as if this closes the argument - and as if he only wrote one character with one view!
Yeah so that thing where you cycle to work in prescription sunnies to find that you've left your actual specs at home and so are going to spend the day squinting or looking like a faded pop star.
A note that if this person visits our place I should probably be made absent for that day as I *will* call him out for this.
This isn't leadership.
This is hypocritical arrogance.
How dare you.
The defense here is to effectively critisise parents who have been more frightened, more stretched - but ultimately more brave - that this sociopath?
For everyone who has tried to do the right thing for these past months, even when it has been tough.
How dare you.
Protecting one’s family is what any good parent does. The

statement clarifies the situation and it is wholly inappropriate to politicise it.

Pause.
General apoplexy...
I realise that I've been feeling troubled by the phrase "social distancing".
I get it - oh boy, I get it.
But don't we need "social" contact more than ever? Don't we need to reach out and touch each other's minds more than ever?
Physical distancing, yes.
But we need closeness.
I have news.
Big, tasteless Christmassy news.
This year,

- infection control - fully support
- protection: eg mother of newborn - visitors can be exhausting
- crowd control - so make a maximum number

Christmas in the hospital. A short thread.
One of the many joys of working in paediatrics is Christmas.
I'm proud to say that in December
@BWC_NHS
turns into The Place That Taste Forgot.
It is like a Unicorn vomited. And then soiled itself. It is hilarious and brilliant.
A lovely ride today.
Struck me, seeing lots of folk out, unfit, running slowly, or on bad bikes badly set up, that it must take a tremendous meanness of spirit not to wish to applaud their amazing effort.
They're doing proper hard work.
I raise a glass to you all!
I've decided that since I need to wear a mask nearly all of the time in in the buildings at
@BWC_NHS
I'm going to double the time and effort I spend on my eye makeup.
I think this is quite important.
I now realise that none of my adherent Muslim friends, or others who eshew alcohol for other reasons, have ever had a party.
Nor has there ever been such a thing as a children's party.
@theJeremyVine
I've tried to minimise casual medicalisation since a child psychiatry professor colleague described that OCD was one of the most challenging things he struggled to treat. Describing ourselves as "a bit OCD" does devalue the true suffering of some folk.
Yesterday was a horrible day for cycling in the West Midlands, with a cyclist killed and another very critically injured.
Decided to head out today between rain showers to... I don't know. Breathe?
But it was achingly beautiful.
#LoveCyclingWM
I'm beginning to form the impression - bear with me here - that the folk in the replies who are concerned that they may need to, well, pay attention while operating dangerous machinery might be better off not actually driving any more?
I'm becoming increasingly certain that, after some reading and maths, we should be teaching children genuine critical thinking skills - how to interpret evidence, etc.
And that this should be repeated and repeated and become a core part of who we all are.
You might have noticed that it is December later this week...
You might remember this thread from last year...
So.
What do you think?
Have
@contender400
,
@BCH_CPSC
and I been busy?
Watch this space to find out...
To the people who say "But it never hurt me" - the fact that you say this, and can't perceive that it is wrong, is proof of a lasting hurt.

Folk who write "... and it never did me (us) any harm" in a non ironic way should have to submit a 10,000 word essay on recall bias, selection bias and survivorship bias, to be marked by three statisticians.

Dear
@MooseAllain
,
I'd like you to know that I've carried these with me and shared with 60 or more children at

.
I gave the last few away on the round this morning.
Loved by every child - and not a few adults too.
Thank you so very much

Our free to download Advent calendar is here! It’s a little different this year, we hope you will embellish and decorate it in fine style. Please share, print off, and distribute far and wide.

In my team a while back we had a horrible time.
I realised that while the naff management-speak is strictly true that there is no "I" in "team", there is, however, "tea".
My role was to make lots.
I'm sitting here chuckling at the memory of the 6 yo I saw recently who wasn't sure whether they should include, in their family tree we were constructing, their imaginary brother.
In other news - the imaginary brother was quite naughty and played tricks.
One of my core professional behaviours is the ability to say
"Oh.
I got that wrong.
I'm so sorry.
What can I do to make thing better, for this time and the next?"
Would be great to see someone in government embrace this from time to time.
As a paediatrician, I don't know quite where I stand on this.
Oh, hold on - I do, it's brilliant and I wish I'd thought of it when my kids were small enough!
Welcome to Procrastination Club.
Now, the first rule of Procrastination Club is ooo shiny, I wonder what that does, maybe I'd feel more like this after a nice cup of tea.
Overheard my own
@MirandaKeeling
moment earlier.
A mum with a small child.
Presumably having seen the nearby bloke with a baby in a front papoose.

For me it is about whether you are adding to the burden of the other person.
If, in your expression of emotion you add to their burden, this is bad.
If, somehow, you can help them shoulder some small fragment of it, then OK.

Thank you for your comments.
I sincerely hope that you are never in a situation where you are a vulnerable pavement user, or with one.
Have a lovely evening!
A general reminder.
Setting a country into a process which results in years more negotiation is no more "getting it done" than my cracking an egg is "baking a cake".
Especially if I have trashed the kitchen and bought no ingredients.

Vish was an outstanding paediatrician who embodied the values of the finest healthcare professionals I've met.
I'm not sure I know how to ask a medical student if they're the sort of hungry that

seems to be describing.
But please know that if you're working with me, and you are hungry, or would just like a coffee, then just ask.

3. Fines, ticketing, towing
4. Walking with a nice sharp-edged pushchair even when you don't have kids...

Honestly? No.
And I'd have not taken it anywhere if he had not persisted in driving at me, and doubled down with rudeness and sarcasm, as per my first.
But what will happen next time he fancies driving like this?

I have a theory that a time traveller could identify the decade by what veggie option they're offered in a restaurant.
Nut loaf - niche but 80s
Veggie lasagne - 90s
Risotto - 00s
Variety - emerges in 10s but retro recurs!
I know that this will appear like ego, not intended, but what I want to say is that sometimes the kindness of messages like this shine light into the darkest parts of our work lives.
