Needed to take the day exploring the Seven Sisters and Birling Gap whilst I’m down in Sussex. Looking at the pillboxes and anti-tank fortifications in case operation Sea Lion would be launched. Thanks to the Soviet counteroffensive it never happened. New video out later today.

We’re working with volunteers on the Kennet & Avon Canal to survey and repurpose redundant military pillbox structures, constructed as WWII defences 🧱 So far, we’ve identified 26 pillboxes that remain along the stretch and are repurposing them as ‘bat bunkers’ 🦇

The sheer number and type of (often hidden) anti-invasion defences the Brits set up in 1940 is incredible. Pillboxes disguised as vans, gas stations & ice cream stands, tank traps inside hedges, underground "stay-behind" bunkers. More impressive is a lot of it is still there...
Hiding in a Sussex hedgerow are part of a chain of anti-tank obstacles. After the debacle of Dunkirk in 1940 an invasion appeared to be imminent. In this case the tiny village of Cripps Corner was designated a nodal point to be defended by a ring of some 750 concrete blocks.

Yesterday, we drove along the old (Mount Erskine) road into Georgetown and I spotted another pillbox that had been dug up by the city council, I couldn’t contain my excitement, I’ll have to investigate! I previously did a “survey” of SWW pillboxes and bunkers in Penang in 2023 👇🏻
Small beginnings in #Penang, it was surrendered without a fight by both the #British & #Japanese in the #SWW #WWII #WW2 This is an example of an inland Japanese Pillbox on Jalan Mount Erskine. Nearly all #British fortifications in Penang were along the coastline. #BattleOfMalaya
