I was away at a conference this weekend (more about that tomorrow) and came back just in time to do bed check on the new lambs (my kids held the fort in the meantime, BLESS THEM). Three day old Leicester Longwool twins, internal dialogue probably sounds something like this:

Another exciting morning of lambs! Both big Leicester Longwool ewe lambs, still trying to figure out the whole nursing thing--the Leicesters are quite a bit slower than the Merinos to get their babies up and going and they need a lot more intervention and help from our shepherds.

Lambing season always brings the unexpected--like these twin Leicester Longwool ewe lambs, who arrived yesterday to a ewe who wasn't even supposed to be preggers! In fact, she was still down in the main pasture. But she's doing a great job with her two little surprises.

Three bottle lambs this year! Victoria Sponge, a brown Merino ewe lamb, is a rejected twin, and Honey is a Leicester Longwool in the same boat. Stroopwafel, sadly, is a Leicester orphan. But all three of our bottle lambs are well cared for--and they are so very, very friendly.

They have a barn, and they could go into it. But no, the Leicester Longwool and Merino sheep prefer to forage for winter roots with wind howling around their ears. Because when you've got 11 months of wool on your back, you're pretty well insulated from the weather!

When you actually take seriously the uniqueness and antiquity of local landraces - not just with sheep, but they are emblematic of the point - this question becomes far thornier. No, "sheep" - Ovis aries - are not native to Britain... but what about the Wensleydale longwool?

One of the most satisfying parts of farming...putting livestock out on ungrazed land. This morning, the cows and the Leicester Longwool and Merino bucks went out onto new red clover with rye and sweet peas and more. They are so, so happy. And so are we.

i have some very species specific headcanons for what hybrids I think my faves would be. Tango is a hedgehog. Martyn is a crocodilian (what species depends on the series) ren is an akita!! Bigb is a stellar’s jay. Zedaph is a leicester longwool!!!

It's that time of year again--the sheep have gone into their breeding groups! The Merinos are our biggest group, but we're also breeding three Leicester Longwool ewes this year. They'll stay together for six weeks, and then in five months there will be lambs!
