We're atop one of the pyramids at the ancient Mayan site of Calakmul 🇲🇽. 40km to the south (at 11 o'clock in this image) are the even larger pyramids of El Mirador 🇬🇹. This section of the Yucatan jungle was the set for the Yavin IV rebel base in the Star Wars movies.

"Rediscovered" only in 1931, the Mayan city of Calakmul is one of the least visited major sites in the Yucatan. At its peak in the 7th century CE, it had 50,000 inhabitants; you get the feeling the jungle could quickly return any time...🇲🇽
