How do you take your Netflix, grainy or smooth?.Turns out humans have a perceptively insatiable desire for randomness. Perfect is boring, we like a little chaos in the pictures.
Netflix is now adding "synthesized" (fake) grain into some titles via an obscure AV1 feature. Compression kills film grain in just about any low-bitrate codec, so this is an attempt to get closer to original source. The bandwidth saving is immense, but I kind of hate it.
