For nearly a thousand years, the ancient world’s most popular comedian was Menander of Athens (342/341 - 290/289 BC), the founder of “New Comedy”. Ironically, his work was almost completely lost until 1952 when the first complete play “Dyskolos” showed up in a Coptic Codex.
