Conquistadors in the 14th/15th century reportedly found a city in the Amazon more advanced than European cities. They returned with others, but the amazing, cosmopolitan, and advanced city was gone. #LostCivilizations #Amazon

Was waiting for my burger and the guys behind me were a Spaniard explaining to two Brazilians how Spaniards are taught that Spain didn’t really have colonies and the Conquistadors were not so bad because they mixed with the indigenous population. And Chat, yes, I did 😬

AZTEC BATMAN: CLASH OF EMPIRES reimagines the cape crusader as an Aztec warrior fighting Spanish conquistadors in Tenochtitlán. For @delosLAtimes, I interviewed the Mexican team behind it, director Juan Meza-Leon and producer Jose Carlos Garcia de Letona. Link in first reply.

Pro tip: Don’t use the civilization that sacrificed 1,000-20,000 humans every 260 days for upwards of 81 years to criticize the Conquistadors. Like, the Conquistadors weren’t great, but there’s a reason the majority of Mesoamerica sided with them against the Aztec Empire…

No, New Mexico wasn’t named after the country of Mexico which didn’t even exist when New Mexico was settled by the Spanish Conquistadors and the Indians from the Aztec valley. New Mexico was named after an Aztec valley.

The Conquistadors were blown away when they first laid eyes upon the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán. Eyewitness and Chronicler Bernal Díaz del Castillo describes the moment: "Our astonishment was indeed raised to the highest pitch, and we could not help remarking to each other,
