It starts with cfengine in the early 1990s, and it carries on in essentially every piece of software that matters in the space today. I've dedicated a significant portion of my own life to building and using tools that leverage these ideas.

I miss the change confirmation days (#puupet, #chef, #ansible, #saltstack, #cfengine) and the dreams of what the future may hold. I miss the days when those that had DevOps related set of skills were in high demand, and our economy was growing.

The two coolest things a while back in the day were CFEngine and SSO w/ LDAP and Kerberos. When Windows Server was cool, I tried to replicate similar solutions in Linux dabble in interoperability.

@esrtweet “…updates are generally pull rather than push.”. One of my bigger professional regrets is not pursuing companywide adoption of CFEngine more diligently. A philosophy of CFEngine is that a machine should be the sole arbiter of any changes to be made to its config state.
