OMG!!!! You guys wanna hear something crazyyyyy??? 🤪🤪
Defunding the Police means reallocating gratuitous spending from one budget to other public services that are holding on by a thread: education, healthcare, housing, transportation, fire, and more.
Nuts, right?
@harto
I think the outcry we're hearing in response to defunding the police is that it sounds so final and permanent. It sounds like, "THE POLICE GET NO MONEY, SO YOU HAVE TO FEND FOR YOURSELF WHEN CRIME HAPPENS." I wonder if there's a better way to word it so it's more palatable?
@harto
And just think of the personal savings, when you don't have to worry about civil forfeiture.
Currently, civil forfeiture (where the police take your stuff, for any or no reason, and don't give it back) robs US citizens more than all burglaries per year.
@harto
Los Angeles wants to spend about $825 per citizen on the LAPD. My city spends $288 per citizen. I feel like LA is getting a bad deal with their current police force, and should look for ways to improve their spending efficiency.
@harto
And hey! Maybe social workers are better trained and equipped to deal with a lot of the things that police currently deal with. So maybe, like, we should have more of them.
