This variables pane was great, but we were wondering if there was a faster way to interact with variables without a lot of "switching" between the two sides of the screen, so it was an obvious choice for us to introduce in-line editing of values to variables.

We realized this was an unnecessary complexity to our end users, esp those who were new to Postman and those experimenting with variables. So we made it easier to give value to variables without scopes and optionally add it to a scope if needed.

To enable a seamless expeience for this, we had to remove a lot of the system complexity we had earlier introduced from the user. This involved simplifying variable scopes. A variable could exist under 3 different scope that give visibility like collection/global/environment.

Even with the right environment set, we'd have some variables that sometimes expect user input - they are usually left blank , or have a default value that needs to be changed before the request is sent. To solve for this, we gathered all the variables to a single place.

We first had introduced a way to pin specific environments to collections and requests earlier this year, so that consumers of the API would know which environments go well with which collections, but this wasn't enough.
