What I learned in this episode about Percy Priest Lake:. 1. A record 76lb fish was likely 80 yrs old. 2. Best campsites are 11/12 at Anderson Rd. 3. The rowing club once sank a $45k boat during practice. Also shared my story about a stowaway raccoon.

My son who was an infant when Valor was a startup charter was lucky enough to get a lottery spot. He started 5th grade today. We definitely feel like we hit the lottery. He was even more excited than me.

The academics are incredible. But that's not what impressed me so much initially. It was that they were perhaps more focused on social-emotional learning, and not in a touchy-feely way (though I definitely teared up the first time I watched this).

They quickly ascended to be one of the top performing open-enrollment public schools in TN. I especially like this analysis of "inverting" the achievement gap. In other words, their disadvantaged students outperform non-disadvantaged students elsewhere.

Even charter critic @WillPinkston was rooting for them. “I’m a Valor fan. And more specifically, I’m a fan of Todd Dickson’s,” he told me at the time. “Particularly if it succeeds, there are going to be a lot of lessons learned.” (I'd love Will to weigh in if he sees this.

A decade ago, I did a batch of stories about @valorcollegiate. Charter schools were a touchy topic in Nashville, and Valor flew above the fray with its pitch to make cultural and economic diversity a cornerstone. I had an infant at the time. [thread]

Curiosity got the best of me and I made a trip to the Legislative Security desk to ask "How many guns have you checked and allowed in this week?" The answer surprised even me. An est. 25-30 firearms were allowed into our building during the first two days(in one entrance).🧵.
