Ecologist, conservationist, and occasional bird ringer. Can sometimes be found wide awake. Looks suspiciously Welsh. Views are my own. #ornithology

0LF is one of oldest gulls at @Flatholmers (the oldest is 2XF, 2011). You can see that it has its ideas very clear and keeps coming back to the exact same places! Seen only once in Portugal, I wonder if continues to go there? Thanks to all bird watchers! 📸: Annie Sconzani, 2019

Some of our colour ringed chicks seems to be reluctant to leave Wales, while others are already departed and living their best life in warmer habitats. One example is F:E78 ringed by @AnnieBookerArt who is already in Quarteira, Portugal! Good luck little one ! 📸: Daniel Santos

Last week saw the reintroduction of Water Voles to the River Thaw in the Vale of Glamorgan thanks to a partnership between @INCCymru @WTSWW SWERT @Thawproject & @NatResWales. The project follows years of habitat restoration and mink control. Huge thank you to the local landowner.

The gulls from @Flatholmers always bring us surprises. We got this sighting from a neighbour in Caerphilly. This neighbour is 92 and loves his garden and his new addition. He rally wanted to know where it came from so asked help to his son to please find out.

F:A67 has been seen so so much since ringed in 2022 as a chick! It’s now in Gijón, Spain. Seen only once back to the UK last year, but not near the colony! Let’s hope it comes back for breeding in 2025! 📸: Cesar Fernandez

Just shy of 500 Storm Petrels have been processed in the Lime Kiln this year, one in 13 of which was already ringed. One from the Channel Islands last night, recently birds from France and Dorset along with some ringed here as chicks. Gothic scenes with magic little seabirds

Love this story. Cocker spaniels wearing backpacks so they can spread seeds as they run around ‘like wolves used to do.’ Dogs with backpacks plant seeds to rewild lost woodland https://t.co/k7qcnk6VZ7

🏞️ Sites of Special Scientific Interest are amongst our most important places for nature in Wales. 🤝 We welcome @WGRural’s decision to include management of SSSIs in the Universal Payment for the SFS to ensure farmers are rewarded for looking after them. https://t.co/aZ7FpcrzqI

For example - soil health is awesome for biodiversity & farm productivity So is grassland biodiversity Even hedgerows and shelter belts have productivity gain effects As do field trees in the right place The idea that is either nature restoration or food security is dumb
