Not to sound like I’m parroting @eric_neugeboren, but some interesting implications here for @Chattah4Nevada:

Phase 2 of a project to create a unified tax system across Nevada's state government went live today — with some hiccups, per email below that was sent to stat workers.

Nevada public schools are seeing increases in inexperienced and “out-of-field” teachers. @eric_neugeboren and @rociohzz report on recent state data — and why school districts aren’t concerned or surprised:

New data shows that state public schools are seeing a surge in teachers with less than three years of experience and teaching subjects they are not licensed in.

The state collected $102M more this FY than what was expected in May. But there are some caveats related to when certain revenues were collected, so the overperformance is not as large as it appears "The [conservative] forecast ... is holding," a top finance official said.

The state's actual revenues for FY25 came in about $22M less than what the Economic Forum expected in May. It was largely because of changes in revenues from the commerce (because of a technical issue) and unclaimed property taxes (because of changes in the 2023 Legislature).

An interesting graph: The state's general fund had no change from FY24-25, despite personal income growing 5.5%. Why? People may earn more but allocate money to untaxed categories, such as savings other than debt payments.

This data is from 2023-2024, but it shows that nearly double the migration into Nevada came internationally than domestically.

Nevada (toward right of this graphic) faces a challenge of matching unemployed workers to jobs. But the bulk of Nevada's unemployed population are now entrants to the workforce, not people who have been laid off.

Of Note: Nevada's employment base is less exposed to federal government workforce changes than many other states. The below graph shows the shutdown affected Nevada much less than other states. Counties with the largest share of federal workers typically have military activity.

Construction jobs were on the upswing, but there's been a noticeable slowdown recently. "As we've seen mortgage rates going up and housing prices being very high, some of the demand there for housing has been softening, and you can see that showing up in the construction data."
