The Labor Party in England is now proposing to get rid of almost all jury trials in England to make the criminal system more efficient. This should be a warning for us all. Neoliberals are walking us into the waiting arms of authoritarians.

You can read more about it here. It's difficult to describe how dangerous much of the establishment is in both the Labor Party in the UK and the Democratic Party in the US.

@equalityAlec How about if you pay for a private attorney you can have a jury trial, use public defender, bench trial only?

@equalityAlec WHAT? Trial by jury is a bedrock of democracy! Speaking as an American, this is shocking. Our Founders, drawing on centuries of English law, thought it so important they included it twice in the Constitution: Article III and the 6th Amendment. I hope this doesn't happen.

@equalityAlec On the same day that they’re shuffling judges around to get a ruling criminalizing Palestine protesters

A judge gets pulled from the Palestine Action judicial review at the last minute, and the Ministry of Defence refuses to explain why. The three replacement judges include a former government lawyer and a judge who previously ruled in favour of allowing F-35 components to be sent

@equalityAlec Minor quibble - I don't see it as neoliberals walking us into the arms of authoritarians. Rather, the neoliberals ARE authoritarians themselves and they're simply consolidating their power.

@equalityAlec The fact that it’s possible for them, a small evil group of people, to do that means that you already are in an authoritarian state.
