The SA Agulhas II departed for
#Antarcticta
from Cape Town in December with the team for 2023, delivering equipment, supplies and fuel. South Africa supports other nations operating in Antarctica.
The
#SANAE
base in
#Antarctica
was built on a flat-topped nunatak called Vesleskarvet. A nunatak is a rock peak protruding from an ice sheet's surface. The base is raised on stilts allowing snow to blow under it. It has inspired other base designs in
#Antarctica
.

62. The Emperor Penguin is positioned comfortably on a researcher's lap for blood and feather collection. After handling each bird, the researchers take a picture to prove that it was alive & well after their operation has ceased.
Chinstrap Penguin uses icebergs of all sizes as roosting stops that provide opportunities for socialising, grooming & resting. The SA Agulhas II sailed past this berg giving researchers a photo opportunity.
South Polar Skua birds attend penguin colonies for the remains of the failed breeding attempts. They were seen constantly flying over the colony at Akta Bukta where our seabird team was working to deploy tracking devices on ten juvenile Emperor Penguins.
The Top Predators Team climbed the Robertskollen nunataks during their week-long stay at
#SANAE
Base. The team surveyed active nests and looked for branded birds during this activity. This is one of the projects conducted by the DFFE in
#Antarctica
.
The newly independent
#EmperorPenguin
chicks recently tagged in
#Antarctica
have initiated their journey into the water. They are now fit enough to face life on their own.
Through this project, researchers will understand how the
#EmperorPenguin
chicks navigate the first few months of their life in & around the unforgiving polar waters. Here are two of the 10 tags that are now all transmitting.
#Antarctica
The
#RossSeal
is the least researched
#Antarctic
seal. Researchers from
@UpTuks
&
@unisa
are deploying satellite-linked position transmitting instruments to better understand their movement in these waters. Data collected will contribute towards understanding this elusive species
