A steak au poivre sandwich, with horseradish cream, caramelized onions, and provolone, at Bailey's Backyard, Ridgefield, Connecticut. Also shown: a blueberry and local green salad, serving both as palate freshener and as justification for getting fries with that.

Street-style moin moin, Nigerian bean pie — studded with mackerel caught by the namesake proprietor on a visit to Maine— by Ayo's Kitchen, Uptown Night Market, Manhattan. Also at the market, which returns Thursday: beef suya, joloff rice, and plantain by Yemkem Catering Service.

I needed four-five bites to reach the namesake of my royal hot dog at Lavash Uz N1 in Kensington, Brooklyn. The boiled dog itself was humdrum, but the whole — including julienned carrots, noodle salad, sliced tomatoes, and matchstick fries — was better than I hoped.

A wheel pie with cream and tapioca (comped) at Bearin Wheel Pie, Landmark Quest Mall Flushing, Queens. The mall's mini food court — including Bearin, Joe's Steam Rice Roll, and all the vendors in between — closes at the end of August for renovations, duration unknown.

A scoop of pistachio at Max and Mina's Ice Cream, Kew Gardens Hills, Queens. Also shown: a pair of vintage ads, in the company of record albums, bumper stickers, cereal boxes, and what-have-you that blanket the shop's counter front, walls, and ceiling.

Lox with honey mustard and toasted almonds, one of several varieties; fried gefilte fish awaiting mushroom sauce; and a spicy Moroccan-style fish stew from Yitzchok's Herring, 7214 Main St., Kew Gardens Hills, Queens (all of these graciously comped).

Fresh from the fryer, as it's best enjoyed, this 鲜椒大葱饼/scallion pancake/pastelito de cebolla was almost too hot to handle. (H/T Gordon Yu for details on the owners' Guizhou and Dominican roots). At The Pancake, 13655 Roosevelt Ave., Flushing, Queens

In Russian, "kartoshka" can mean "potato," but it might also be a no-bake confection shaped like one. Cookie crumbs, butter, condensed milk, and cocoa powder are common ingredients; mine had crushed walnuts, too. At the new Dmitriev's Bistro, 1212 Ave. Z, Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn

My Algerian bourek annabi — thin pastry leaves wrapped around mashed potato and minced beef, enriched with soft-cooked egg, and fried — was limber as a flapjack, too limber to eat while holding it aloft. At Foodz, in Jersey City, I relied instead on an out-of-the-box solution.

Okra soup with whiting and an oatmeal swallow, King's Pride Food, Jersey City. I've never heard this Nigerian soup described as "drawy," but the word well captures the texture of simmered fresh-cut okra. Also: leavings (no cutlery needed); the restaurant beside Masjid al-Iman.

A last black and white shake at Hector's Cafe & Diner, 44 Little West 12th St., which has outlasted almost all the butchers in the Meatpacking District. After 76 years, Hector's closes its doors for the last time on Friday afternoon.
