We argue that addressing non-economic loss and damage does not require external agencies to come up with completely new interventions. Instead, we can identify what people are already doing, and build on, support and complement some of these existing responses.

As most of these autonomous responses (to non-economic loss and damage) require financial resources, they can further erode people's livelihoods. Thus, people face loss and damage not only when they are affected by a flood or drought, but also as they rebuild their livelihoods.

highly exposed to increasing climate-related hazards, financially insecure, and with little support from their governments. In these adverse conditions, they still manage to replant forests, uphold religious traditions, or homeschool their children.

Most of these autonomous responses are not 'proper' adaptation responses, i.e. they will not support or protect people's livelihoods in the long term in the face of climate change. This is not to be expected, as the participants are mostly people living in regions that are...

Based on data from two districts in Bangladesh, our assessments uncover (1) how people experience non-economic loss and damage and (2) how they are already, autonomously, responding to this. This is summarised in Table 2
