Thread 🧵I have zero CS experience besides the Google Cyber Cert I did and the studying I have been doing for the Sec+. I took it upon myself to email people in the Cyber org at my company and tell them I wanted to make a change. I asked to put time on their calendars
I met with them about whatever posting they had up. I had two I was interviewing for about a month ago and those didn’t work out. Totally fine. I’m glad they didn’t. But with those two postings, I built a relationship with the recruiter who supports the CS org
She called me about one of the roles I got the offer for and said listen, I was talking to the hiring manager about this role and I immediately thought of you and thought you would be a good fit. She wants to interview you. I was super excited.
The other role came about because I had reached out to this hiring manager and the role he had up at the time was about to be filled but he still wanted to talk with me. I ended up meeting with him and his boss. Really great conversation. He told me he would have a role opening
We kept in touch via email and his role opened maybe a week or so later. I told him I was already interviewing for this other role. He said he loved my transparency and sent me well wishes on that interview and let me know that actually the roles work together in some ways
So boom. I’ve interviewed for one role twice, had the second one last Wednesday. The other roles second/final interview is scheduled for Tuesday, 4/2. When I spoke to the recruiter today and she told me I had BOTH offers I almost fainted.
She told me that the fucking CISO of my company called her and told her to offer me both roles. Told her that I was special and he knows I will be successful in whatever role I choose and gave his opinion on which role he thought I would be best for. THE FUCKING CISO!!!
To jump back to the conversation with that hiring manager and his boss, he told me he didn’t care I didn’t have technical experience. He could teach me as long as I was willing to learn but he wanted somebody who was creative and who can problem solve.
I say all of this to say, I did this with zero experience. I set a goal and I did what I had to do to make it. I used my relationship skills to move to a completely new career where I have no experience. Set yourself a goal and make it fucking happen!
