My guess for the size of the pre-tournament selling market (considering pros only): $97m total dollars * 25% pros = $24m * On average 40% sold = $10m. The swapping market is probably another $4m or so.
The Main had 9,735 entries this year, so $97m in buyin dollars. How much of that action was sold pre-tournament? (by pros only, so like 25% of the field).

Every pro has sold action pre-tournament. Few have sold in late stages. The benefits to selling action in late stages are widely understood. But the behaviors and infrastructure needed to actually make deals happen is not quite there.

My guess for the size of the late stage ICM market this year is ~$1m total sold or so. Keep in mind on Day 5 with 522 remaining, there is still $71m of the prize pool to be distributed. (if you sold ICM action this year or know a friend that did please DM me, for market research).

Selling action pre-tournament protects you from the downside (losing your buyin). Selling action deep in a tournament realizes your upside (gives access to value from top finishes that you would only get 1-10% of the time). To best control variance you should do both.
