Hey
#MedTwitter
, my name is Deb and I am applying
#GeneralSurgery
for
#Match2024
My interests include med ed, diversity mentoring & bioethics! Can’t wait to see where this journey takes me.
I enjoy brunch, trying new makeup, a great cup of coffee, traveling, yoga & lifting.
Anywho, time to announce that I’ll be applying
#GeneralSurgery
for
#MATCH2024
. Afrobeats coming to an OR near you soon :) excited to be entering this amazing field.
I had a moment today where I had to tell myself to stop selling myself short. Like yes I am an osteopathic medical student, no I’m not top of my class, yes I am a black woman going into surgery. but still apply to that program. Go to that audition. Like girl, hype yourself.
A picture that speaks a thousand words. The newest interns of BMC surgery. A group of DIVERSE and so kind individuals. I really hit the lottery with this amazing group of women and men who share similar values and prioritize patient care to the most vulnerable.
So grateful for all the interviews I’ve received and that so many programs see the potential in me. They are going to make ranking them so so hard.
Also virtual interviewing is tiring.
Tonight I was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. My ceremony was virtual🙃, which honestly is the theme of my medical school life. But shoutout to my classmates for nominating me 🤞🏾
Honored to have received the special medallion award with my co-founder! This award recognizes all the success of the JUMPSTART program and just how many underrepresented minorities it has touched in Missouri and beyond. Can’t believe tomorrow is the day 🥹
Yes I have worked so hard to achieve this title, but yall being a physician is not my whole identity. I have so much to offer outside of my career. I was Deb before I became a doctor and I’ll be Deb after. The formality is to my patients.
now that our new interns are here + have seen these, I can share a lil thing I’ve been working on. we made them each a welcome basket with residency survival essentials, including matching Stitch socks lol🌺🩵
welcome to the fam yall. here’s to starting my chief year
#medtwitter
The energy in this moment & at this conference. Unmatched. For once, we are no longer the minority in spaces like this. We can just celebrate and pour into ourselves unapologetically. Love my SNMA fam 🤍✊🏿
As someone who spent her entire third year hopping from hospital to hospital each month and now doing that exact same thing during her fourth year for my auditions, I’m really looking forward to having a home hospital during residency.
Such an amazing time at my last AMEC convention as a medical student. Even more proud to have served my SNMA family on the Board of Directors as osteopathic co chair. An organization I believe so much in and that will always have a special place in my heart💙

“DO applicants should take both USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK to be considered competitive for any surgical specialty. Additionally, DO students should prioritize formerly-AOA-accredited programs for audition rotations.”
someone pinch me, I am really training in Boston! support my transition to the more expensive side of the country by contributing to my med grad wishlist.
For all premed students who are interested in attending

AMEC 2024, a scholarship opportunity that will cover your lodging, flights and registration
L earning viscersomatics and chapmans points is like learning the krebs cycle.
Takes up space in your brain for 2 mins and somehow grows legs and leaves immediately after test day.
Match week is upon us.
sharing my

as I enter match week. Please feel free to contribute to my journey as I will relocating after living at home for the past year. Link is in my bio and here! 🥹

I leave conferences feeling so motivated to be in spaces people like me historically haven’t been in. Not gonna sell myself short this residency season, shooting for allll the stars.
Took my last exam of preclinicals today and officially ended my second year! Crazy how time flies, I remember taking these pictures so excited to begin my journey to becoming a doctor, and now I’m halfway there! 🥺 Next stop is boards. Pray for me as dedicated starts
#MedTwitter
So glad I was able to attend
#SBASUMich2023
! A great weekend of networking with black surgeons and future surgeons. Leaving feeling so refreshed and ready to take on interview season!
why residency program tabling at SNMA’s annual AMEC is an invaluable diversity recruitment & retention tool for URiM students and residents: a brief thread 🧵 …
Biggest piece of advice for my fourth years on auditions / applying into surgery residency: GO WHERE YOU ARE CELEBRATED. I did many auditions and some places were a clear not match. Lean into those feelings heavy and prioritize what you want in a program.
Happy national osteopathic medicine (NOM) week! Recently, I have transitioned to being the new SNMA National Osteopathic School Committee Co-Chair. Excited to further expand on osteopathic programming and mentoring.
#DOproud
Do you get a winter break during your third years (read: are Gods favorite) or are you scrubbing into 6 hours surgeries on Christmas Eve? Asking for a (very tired, burnt out) friend.
#MedTwitter
Super thankful to
@AACOMmunities
for giving the osteopathic committee the opportunity to award 5 premed students full scholarships to attend AMEC. This is the future of medicine 💙

Successfully defended my thesis this past week. Never in a million years did I think I’d be able to do a masters while in medical school. Huge thank you to my advisors! Really excited to continue to use the knowledge I’ve gained in the future.

2023 is the year I apply and interview for my first doctor job. Someone pinch me, I don’t even know how to change the oil in my car, I can’t adult this hard.
A program so dear to my heart & that I cofounded, JUMPSTART, won its first (of hopefully many) awards. Shoutout to all the people who kept our vision alive for the past 3 years and to the amazing growth we have had. This is the work that’s meaningful to me
As an osteopathic physician, potentially interested in a competitive surgical subspecialty (peds surg, surg onc), in addition to considering research years, do I need to take STEP 3 or does ABSITE score matter more in fellowship apps?
#medtwitter
All I’m saying is, with the cost of inflation ERAS, and Sub-I traveling/housing, you’d think we’d be given more student loans for living. This is the first semester I will officially burn through my entire loan 😭
Normally I’m super optimistic about my experience in med school as I’m grateful to be here, but today it hit me like a ton of bricks that I’ve given and sacrificed so so much to be here and continue to do so. And it sucks. A lot.
Everyone always asks what type of surgeon I want to be. A nice, fun and relatable one. I haven’t spent much time thinking on what subspecialty. Honestly I’m just so excited to explore EVERY single subspecialty during residency and see what I fall in love with.
Feeling overwhelmed by the immense success of the JUMPSTART program this year. Helping URMs into medicine (just like I was helped) is a big reason as to why I continue on and do what I do. They motivate me so much. 🥹
I’ll be at the BSCP conference this weekend and the New England Science Symposium at
@harvardmed
this Sunday!
Excited for lots of science, medicine and networking. Also fun fact, BSCP conference was one of the first conferences I presented at as a Pre-Med undergrad!

Hi my name is Deborah and I’m a third year med student who loves pediatrics…and surgery. Let me go pray real quick because everything I have once believed is being questioned.
@soumya_goblue
My school gave us the option to attend in person but as a class who hasn’t been all together since second year due to varying clinical sites and moving for auditions, I haven’t been to my schools state in more than 9 months. Celebrating at home made the most sense :)
I have never worked out more in my life bc i’m so nervous waiting for match day. I’ve tried cycling, boxing, hot yoga, pilates, trapeze yoga, rowing, pickleball 😀 🫠🫨😵💫
Really looking forward to a weekend at
#SBAS
been hitting a point of burn out now on my fourth audition and a weekend with blackity black physicians to inspire and network with always leaves me feeling refreshed. 🥹
The summer program I helped create is having their second class this weekend and I just have all the feels. So happy that others caught on to the vision of supporting minorities in medicine and kept this program going. can’t wait to meet all the participants🤩
Shoutout to the black CRNA who advocated to not cut off my waist beads right before my surgery and just to tape them. I was not even doing a good job of advocating for myself in that moment so I’m glad she did. This is why we black women in medicine.
Imagine my surprise to find out we pay to apply for auditions.
I wasn’t really surprised at all actually. Just some more hidden costs in this medical journey.
My first job was a certified nursing assistant at 17 years old in 2014.
Today on March 17th, 2023 I was blessed to be selected as the first African American female neurosurgery resident to train at

Overall going into this week knowing that everything will be okay and super grateful for my family and friends who have been sending me prayers and encouraging words all weekend. Feeling strangely at peace. For now, will probably change come Thursday night 😅
