Why did the UK sign the Code of Good Practice on Referendums in 2006, which states referendums should be a 2 stage process and a vote below 55% in favour should be ignored? We're not following the code, we need to
#PutItToThePeople
or
#RevokeA50Now

Apparently 60 other countries, applies to binding referendums but can't see why we couldn't have applied these rules to our advisory referendum.
@johnpearce00
Yup, that's the case but we never hold binding referendums so wtf did we sign it, still no reason not to apply the same rules to the advisory referendum. Won't change a thing but worth sharing I thought.

I'm in favour of a 2nd referendum.
But if one is run on this basis and because of this, then the result is 54% remain, 46% leave (the current poll figures), what would happen?
@adrianbowyer
@jharrisu250071
They wouldn't run the confirmation referendum on this basic as it wouldn't be compatible with the 2016 referendum. Either both have to be over 55% in favour or neither.

I've just checked the Code of Good Practice, it doesn't seem to state either of those things. Where did you get the reference from can you recall?

@TheApparatchik
Iโve been saying this since day 1! Forget the cheating, lying and FPTP rubbish! You canโt get past the CGP and a bloody quorum was an must have! ๐ช๐บ
@csav55
Thanks for this I wasnโt aware of this code of practice-
The absence of the requirement for a supra-majority in the referendum for the huge and irrevocable transition that ANY Brexit would cause always perplexed me, but even more so now!
@csav55
@wible1
The referendum was advisory only, so doesnโt need to comply.
QC for the PM stood up in court and say that she was aware of irregularities and that had it been binding it would have been overturned.
Watch here, key part is late on.
@csav55
It's still not legally binding. If it had been they probably wouldn't have signed it. Tories are masters of the Golden rule of democratic politics: "To be seen to be doing something while actually doing nothing."
@csav55
@FrancesToomey
Why are things done, in the way they are done?
Because Politics say so[.]
One Politician set out his Party's
#Brexit
policy in a pamphlet - ALL other Politicians thought this 'meet'.
- It appears that now more than 80% the electorate agree: Mob-rule is meet.
