This is incredible.
Researchers in Russia just found evidence of stone age military fortifications made by hunter-gatherers.
In some places, defensive forts might have preceded agriculture!
Here's an aerial view🧵
Apparently there are pit houses and enclosures aplenty in this area, indicating long-term settlement and fortification, despite there not being any crop fields to protect.
This area had subsistence, pottery, innovation, rituals, sociopolitical organization—all the parts of the "Neolithic package", with none of the crops.
Apparently crops are not a necessary ingredient to get people to settle down.
Here are two possibilities.
1. Maybe they're at the extreme end of Corylus avellana's range.
2. Maybe they relied on Vaccinium vitis-idaea.
There are a few fruiting plants that they might have defended. The researchers should test for pollen!

temples preceded agriculture in the fertile crescent
and the magnetic polarity thesis in generate predicts it's sedentarism-->agriculture rather than agriculture-->sedentarism
Dates of when people settled some place or discovered some technology are usually moved further back in time and more rarely forward.
Means that a good Bayesian should think that they were settled or discovered further back in time than official estimates say.

I am continually astounded that like actual experts who should know better actually think warfare is like an invention and not the human state of nature. Literally all you need for warfare is two groups with a beef
Even chimps engage in warfare (at their lower level scale)

I wonder if they have any evidence as to long-term, continuous settlement at this site. It could be that the fortification was only occupied during a certain part of the year, a half-step advancement in keeping with a migratory pattern observed in other nomadic peoples.

I absolutely HATE how the diagram shows a river that is not in precisely the same orientation in the photograph so you can figure out where everything is.
MAXIMUM RAGE.
