We’re back for another Track Tuesday. Quick on their feet and with sharp hearing and smell, this bushy-tailed critter is right at home pursuing small birds and mammals in the meadows and forests across Colorado (or in this case taking a quick break to roll in the snow).

The correct answer is a white-tailed ptarmigan! These birds go through a dramatic plumage change, going from mottled grey/brown in the warmer months to a snowy white in the winter. They also have feathers down their legs/feet, which helps they stay warm in their alpine home.

Track Tuesday is here again! This animal is excellent at avoiding the limelight, has a special way of staying warm from head-to-toe, and seeing one means you’ve put some miles (and treeline) behind you. There is no size reference for this week’s tracks.

Ever find you repeat yourself? If you’re referring to an animal by its scientific name when you do that, it’s called a tautonym (use that fun fact at your next wildlife-themed party, trust us). CO is actually home to a few of these species (or will be in the future):

BIRDS We spent 3 hours at Barr Lake State Park last week and saw 18 different bird species! With fewer leaves on the trees and many birds overwintering or passing through our state, wintertime is a great time to spot bald eagles, waterfowl, and many more birds 👀

These tracks were made by a common raven! Found in CO year-round, these omnivores are often seen eating carrion & have a wingspan of 40-50 inches. Thanks for all the guesses, be sure to tune in next week for another Track Tuesday!
