🐦NEW in PLOS Biology: “A large-scale study across the avian clade identifies ecological drivers of neophobia” — by the #ManyBirds Project @TheManyBirds 🔗
journals.plos.org
Neophobia (the aversive response to novelty) varies considerably across species and individuals, and can impact adaptability and survival. This study assesses neophobia in 1400 subjects from 136 bird...

Hot off the press! A collaboration between @UZH_en and @UniNeuchatel within the NCCR Evolving Language led by Franziska Wegdell, Caroline Fryns and Johanna Schick. Asking the question is infant-directed communication present in great apes
New research suggests infant-directed communication expanded in humans and likely emerged after diverging from our great ape common ancestor approximately 6 to 8 million years ago. Learn more in this week’s issue of Science Advances: https://t.co/IU3DX44PBb

Our new paper is out!🐒🔊 Studying two wild chimpanzee populations, we found they flexibly adjust pant hoot acoustics to context (feed vs. travel). Most patterns are shared, but some community differences may suggest a small role for vocal usage learning. https://t.co/eeMvxqbVEO

🚨Very happy to finally share the last chapter from my PhD where we show that the vocal development of wild chimpanzees is enhanced by both greater social and vocal exposure: https://t.co/LbyWeRriis With @fedurekp, G Dezecache, G Muhumuza, @NakedPrimate, @cog_comp_Neuch, & J Call

Gwen joined our lab as a researcher. She studies how group cohesion and cooperation promote communication in social carnivores (wolves 🐺 and dogs 🐕) to ultimately understand the origins of human language @NCCR_Language Check out her latest publication: https://t.co/RVhB16lfNk

@MeunierBastien5 will study wild sooty mangabeys of Taï as a postdoc in our lab in collaboration with @NCCR_Language. He will investigate the extent to which sooty mangabeys' vocalizations have meaning by examining the flexibility in use across different contexts !

@sarah_brocard @NCCR_Language After a PhD in bioacoustics where he studied ultrasonic communication in rodents, @LeoPerrier_ will work on emphasising the dynamics of animal vocalisations over time and space to study the diversification of vocal systems and how these are the precursors of language!

Hot off the press! Is there a pre-linguistic basis for event role attribution? In our new paper out in PLoS Biology, we take a comparative eye tracking approach to explore temporal gaze distribution to agents and patients in dyadic interactions https://t.co/182f3EisZs
