First DeVry Inc. rebranded to DeVry Education in 2014 and then in 2017 to Adtalem Ed (“empower” in Latin) to reflect their divestiture of DeVry and refocus around healthcare education. And now, Adtalem has rebranded to … wait for it … Covista Ed! #RearrangingDeckChairs

Recent price movements in crypto and SaaS / NASDAQ continue to prove blockchain is really just a play on broader tech markets and not a credible hedge against debasement / inflation / US seizures
Think we can all stop pretending crypto is an inflation hedge. Its not digital gold, its highly speculative and questionably valued web3 startups.

Who would have thought that the lone survivors of the 2010s Subprime of Education era would be the student loan servicers and that they’d continue to adapt and find whole new markets to colonize 🪳 https://t.co/L4KrRRgZkL

Has anyone ever asked @TheStalwart why he pronounces it “CAPE-x” instead of “CAP-ex” or @jason why he pronounces it “MOAN-a-tize” instead of “MON-a-tize”?

Google Guided Learning enters the AI chat. Unsurprising they would launch quickly after OpenAI studyMode to protect their massive K-12 education market presence. The real losers will be the 1.0 AI lesson plan generators and math solver plug-ins https://t.co/IFSMhNryYp
ChatGPT StudyMode has raised the bar for all those low level AI for Education start-ups being built by tourist founders. But for those building in real academic rigor, critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, differentiated instruction, an accreditation layer, keep going!

Lexia was so undervalued w/in Rosetta Stone, it triggered a sum-of-the-parts arb buyout of RST. Cambium/Voyager were micro-cap stocks for decades before Veritas took it all private for $900M. HMH went private at $2.3B in 2022, a 3% CAGR since its IPO in 2013. Not success stories.
@CNyren agree public markets tough as sales cycles don't align but have had some success stories hmhc was alright, cambium learning was great, lexia inside rosetta got a nice premium the real value is distribution into classroom which can take yrs for someone trying to break in

As ChatGPT becomes a go-to tool for students, we’re committed to ensuring it fosters deeper understanding and learning. Introducing study mode in ChatGPT — a learning experience that helps you work through problems step-by-step instead of just getting an answer.

$MH transitioned to majority digital / recurring revenue, tho is now at mature margins / growth. I don't see how institutional textbook / edtech are as vulnerable to AI as B2C study $CHGG. Regardless why does $MH trade below lower margin / growth $PSON (2.2x Rev, 9.5x EBITDA)? //

$MH is trading just below its IPO price of $17, a FD market cap of $2.6B and Enterprise Value of $5B, or 2.4x Revenue and just 7x Adj EBITDA. Revenue is 2/3rd recurring and growing 4% since 2023 while Adj EBITDA (a full 35% of Rev) has been increasing 150bp per annum. 3/4

This was the second attempt to bring $MH public, as Apollo (which first bought it for $2.4B in 2013 at 1.3x Revenue and 10x EBITDA) had tried in 2015 (also trying to combine with Cengage in 2019), before selling to Platinum in 2021 for $4.5B, or 2x Revenue and 12x EBITDA. 2/4

Its been 4 years since the last IPOs in education and we have less than 10 publicly traded education stocks above $1BN in market cap, so this week's IPO of McGraw Hill Education $MH was kind of cool, aside from the fact that our industry just does not work in public markets. 1/4

Everyone asking me about Trump implications for education stocks and I am reminded that of the Morgan Stanley software coverage universe, 3 of the 10 worst performing tech stocks YTD are education companies $CHGG, $COUR and $UDMY (4 if you include the bankrupt and delisted 2U).

$LRN announces strong FY1Q25 beat with record enrollments proving most of this short report false. In particular, ESSER funding was <3% revenue impact and immaterial to profit %. Stock up 30% today.
Regurgitating short seller reports from 2021 and lifting even from another old Muddy Waters short report on "ghost accounts" at the old Chinese online education company GSX/Gaotu, there is a lot of misinformation here. 1/3

Virtual charter schools have been a thing since 2002. Through 20 years of state oversight, Fuzzy Panda did not just discover wanton abuse of ghost rostering and Chromebook overcharges. Finally, I am surprised $LRN has lost ONLY 7 schools since the 2021 Remote School Bubble 3/3

The K-12 market has been fearing the ESSER funding cliff for 3 years now, but across my portfolio of investments and clients, there has not been one surprise. I have sold 6 K-12 edtech start-ups in 2 years, all to K-12 strategics and this has yet to come up in diligence 2/3

What if Tucker is a CIA agent like his dad and Elon is such an American patriot that he enlisted his VC storyteller David Sacks to develop a pro Russia narrative and spent $44B to turn this into a Potemkin botfarm echo chamber that deluded the Russian FSB into over confidence?
